ABOUT AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER (ASD)

ASD is believed to occur in 1 of every 36 children according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). It is a form of developmental disorder that begins very early in childhood. Children with ASD have varying skills, but typically share problems in social and communication skills. The causes of ASD are not yet identified, but there is agreement that early recognition and intensive intervention are critical to optimize a child’s ability to develop necessary life skills.

WHAT DOES AN ‘ABA INTERVENTION’ LOOK LIKE?

Effective ABA intervention is not a “one size fits all” approach. A Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) customizes the intervention to each learner’s skills, needs, interests, preferences, and family situation. A quality ABA program includes:

• Initial and ongoing assessments
• Application of applied behavior analytic techniques and philosophy
• Emphasis on positive social interactions and enjoyable learning
• Measurable goals that are tracked and monitored
• Support and training for family and staff
• Program is supervised and managed by a Behavior Analyst
• Ongoing adjustment of goals and strategies as necessary

WHO ARE THE ABS PROFESSIONALS ON OUR STAFF?

Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBA) are independently practicing clinicians who have earned certification through a national certification board and attained at least a master’s degree in a related field. They may supervise assistant behavior analysts or registered behavior technicians who will implement the programming that they have developed for your learner. (BACB.com)

Board Certified Assistant Behavior Analysts (BCaBA) are bachelor level clinicians that have earned certification through the Behavior Analyst Certification Board. These clinicians receive ongoing supervision from a BCBA. (BACB.com)

Registered Behavior Technicians (RBT) is a paraprofessional certification in behavior analysis. RBTs assist in delivering behavior analysis services and practice under the direction and close supervision of an RBT Supervisor or BCBA, who is responsible for all work that Registered Behavior Technicians perform. ABOUT APPLIED BEHAVIORAL ANALYSIS (ABA)

Today, ABA is widely recognized as a safe and effective treatment for autism. It has been endorsed by a number of state and federal agencies, including the U.S. Surgeon General. Over the last decade, the nation has seen a particularly dramatic increase in the use of ABA to help persons with autism live happy and productive lives. In particular, ABA principles and techniques can foster basic skills such as looking, listening and imitating, as well as complex skills such as reading, conversing and understanding another person’s perspective (Autism Speaks).
