This training is appropriate for parents and community members or anyone who has contact with individuals at risk whether in a professional, personal, or informal capacity as a gatekeeper. A gatekeeper’s role is to be aware of persons in their community, recognize any risk factors or warning signs that may be present, connect with that individual, and establish connections that reinforce the necessary safety and support for this person.

The purpose of gatekeeper training is to:

  • Provide an introduction to suicide as a public health issue
  • Engage gatekeepers in playing a role in suicide prevention
  • Educate trainee about risk, protective factors, and nationally accepted warning signs
  • Provide participants with an understanding of how to recognize warning signs
  • Provide participants with tools to be able to connect with a person at risk and link them with appropriate resources
  • Provide participants with the opportunity to “rehearse” an interaction with someone at risk
  • Reduce stigma and encourage help seeking behaviors and access to treatment and support for mental health and substance abuse issues
